Improved Prognosis of Vascular cognitive impairment

About the project

ImProVas stands for Improved Prognosis of Vascular cognitive impairment. Vascular brain disease causing cognitive impairment is highly prevalent. Accurate diagnosis and clinical prognosis in VCI patients is of utmost importance to deliver tailored treatment and improve clinical outcome in this group. However, this is very complex since this group is heterogeneous and the impact of vascular brain disease on the clinical presentation and disease course is unknown. Recent research has shown that MR brain imaging markers for vascular brain disease, such as microbleeds and infarcts, provide insight in disease etiology and have potential for prognosis. However, in clinical practice, such markers are currently only used in a qualitative way since their quantification takes a considerable amount of time and results vary considerably between experts. 

The ImProVas project focuses on optimizing the use of MR brain imaging data in VCI. To this end methods for automatic quantification of the most challenging biomarkers for VCI will be developed. This will include quantification of microbleeds and infarcts. Secondly, prognostic methods based on disease progression models utilizing these biomarkers will be developed. 

This project will have great impact on clinical practice by improving diagnosis and prognosis in patients with vascular cognitive impairment, while also opening up new horizons for clinical dementia research and clinical trials.

Quantib's role in the ImProVas project

Within the ImProVas project Quantib develops a microbleeds detection and labeling algorithm that will be implemented in a research tool that does not require user-interaction. This tool enables the analysis of large scale imaging databases and research on the relation between microbleeds and VCI.
